Overview

Microsoft Office 2016 - Unmistakably Office, designed for Mac.

The new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote provide the best of both worlds for Mac users - the familiar Office experience paired with the best of Mac. If you already use Office on a PC or iPad, you will find yourself right at home in Office 2016 for Mac. It works the way you expect, with the familiar ribbon interface and powerful task panes. Mac users will appreciate the modernized Office experience and the integration of Mac capabilities like Full Screen view and Multi-TouchTM gestures. With full Retina display support, your Office documents look sharper and more vibrant than ever.

Office for Mac is cloud-connected, so you can quickly get to the documents you’ve recently used on other devices and pick up where you left off. New, built-in document sharing tools make it easy to invite teammates to work on a document together. When sharing documents, you won’t have to worry about losing content or formatting, as Office for Mac offers unparalleled compatibility with Office on PCs, tablets, phones and online.

Office 2016 is a version of the Office productivity suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc), typically accessed via the desktop. Office 365 is a cloud-based subscription to a suite of programs including Office 2016. This means you have a few options for purchasing Office 2016: a stand-alone product or as part of an Office 365 subscription.

I have used Microsoft Office since the very beginning in the early 1990s and it's amazing to me that Microsoft doesn't get more criticism for the way it cripples the version for Apple Macs. Among the most glaring that I have encountered so far is in PowerPoint 2016's complete lack of a Grayscale or Black and White view, a feature that has been present in PowerPoint on Windows since at least Office 2003. This view allows you to see how slides will print on a black & white laser printer and it's utterly missing from PowerPoint 2016. Other missing features on the Mac include Word 2016 hyperlinking of cross-references and table of contents for documents exported as PDF; font embedding in present in Windows PowerPoint but missing for Mac; Windows Excel has more number formats than Excel for Mac. I could go on, but it's obvious that Office for Mac is deliberately crippled by Microsoft.

Outlook for Mac update 16.16.11 is awful..... since it;s updated nothing works properly - thinngs keep changing - font's and spacing and it's also changed all my headed paper templates, where have page breaks gone, excel spreadsheets are more unstable than ever and more - how could they do this.... am thinking about just changing to mac software instead of Word.

One of the things that decided me to update my OS from 10.9 to 10.11 was Office 2016...
Well, I can't say it's not working great, globally, but I'm pretty much disappointed because of the disappearance of a few things that I find important in former versions such as:
- no more custom toolbars — I had one for Excel and two for Word...
- Word: no more blue background
- Excel: graphical bug for complex graphs with lots of non-adjacent cells — it's obviously designed for adjacent cells and doesn't accept too many arguments...
- Outlook: can't move profiles to a different drive using a symlink as before (I found some tutorial to achieve that by modifying the app but it didn't work for me)
- Powerpoint: I haven't worked with PP 2016 yet but I expect some disappointment too as I still had to go to PP 2004 in some cases (PP 2011 doesn't accept too many slides!)
So, one might argue that it's just a question of "learning curve", but tell me why I should spend so much time learning how to do what I was easily doing before, and why I should accept the loss of my preferred features when, in the end, it doesn't run faster than Office 2011 and I even had crashes...
Luckily, and to my surprise, Office 2011 still works great on El Capitan! :-)

Hi, I assume that you have MS Office 2019 (version 16.20....). Here update for previous version of MS Office 2016. It started with 16.16. ......
Unfortunately, Microsoft did not give them different Bundle ID, that's why MUD sometimes tangles them

everyone,

I noticed some of you have 15.37 version of office 2016 for Mac. I have a file that runs specifically on 15.37. I have 15.41 but this version has a bug and macro doesn't run on it. Does any of you know how to get 15.37 or even better, if anyone has a dmg file to share?

Appreciate your help in advance!

All updates, including past, for 365, 2016 and 2019 , are available here:

This is a legit site, used and maintained by Mac system admins; all links point to Microsoft servers.

MU Editors: Thank you for splitting out 2016 and 2019 onto separate pages. One thing still needs to be fixed however, as of today (Oct 17, 2018) I received a MU update email because I am signed up to receive notices about Office 2016. The email advised me that update 16.18.0 Build (18101400) was available for Office 2016; I repeat the email says an update for '2016'. This is incorrect. Update 16.18 is an update for Office 2019 not 2016. Anyone who applies this update to a retail/volume copy of 2016 will get updated and their license converted to 365 subscription, in other words they will be prompted to start paying subscription, when before they had one time purchase license. Now that the two product lines are separated and tracked separately, what needs to happen is that users who previously signed up for notices about 2016, need to separately sign up for notices on 2019 (IF, and only if they are interested in 2019). Notices should not be sent to the 2016 group unless it is an actual update SPECIFICALLY FOR 2016. which as of today is stuck on 16.16.18101500. Any future updates to 2016 will never exceed version number 16.18. 16.18 and beyond is exclusively for 2019 and 365 and even those will eventual split as well, when ever support for 2019 retail ends (2023?). BOTTOM LINE TO USERS: IF YOU PURCHASED A COPY OF OFFICE 2016, EITHER ONE TIME PURCHASE (RETAIL) OR VOLUME, DO NOT INSTALL ANY UPDATES OF VERSION 16.18.X OR HIGHER, YOUR LICENSE WILL GET CONVERTED. If you have 365 or a retail copy of 2019, go over to the 2019/365 MU page at https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/60908/microsoft-office-365-2019 to get latest updates, and if you want to be notified, sign up to receive notices for that product line.

MU Editors: You can help clarify much of the confusion regarding 365 vs retail/On the Premises versions of Office. This current MU page is a mash up of both and just confusing the heck out of a lot of people. Here is a link to MS that clarifies much of the situation.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4133312/office-2019-commercial-for-windows-and-mac-frequently-asked-questions

For starters, this current page needs to be renamed "Office 2019 365". This page needs to be more obvious in warning users who do not have 365 to AVOID downloading any of the updates from links on this page.

Second, you may consider a separate MU page for what Microsoft is now calling the 'on the premises' version, or aka what we normally call 'retail/boxed' version, which as of today will now also be available as a 2019.

Lastly for those people who are not upgrading (365 OR on the premises), and remain on Office 2016, you probably want to maintain a 2016 page with the most recent updates, which probably will remain at version 16.16.

Hi
Thank you for your feedback.
I think that in 'Note' section we clarified all questions about Microsoft 365 and 2019

MU Editor: NO, the Notes section does NOT clarify the situation. Apparently even you guys are confused. This page is still titled "Office 2016", 2016 is no longer current for either 365 or the one time purchase, both are now on 2019. HOWEVER, Office 2016 one time purchase is still available for purchase, for those people with macOS pre 10.12.

The 16.17 updates should NOT be installed on Office 2016 one time purchase, it will wipe license and convert the installation to 365 (have you not been reading the feedback on this page?)

Many of the links on this page are labeled wrong, for example the one that is labeled "Microsoft Excel 17.17.0 Updater " actually downloads 16.17, but even that should NOT be on this page as it is too easy for someone to download that and install on their 2016 one time purchase or volume installation and accidentally upgrade to 365.

WHAT MU should have: 1) one page for Office 2016 while it is still available for purchase (for how long, I don't know) that covers ONLY one time purchase installations. Update links on that page should stop at 16.16 (no 16.17 updaters on that page). Make clear those updates should only be installed if user has volume or one time purchase installation, not 365.

2) a new page that handles Office "2019" 365 with links to updates from 16.17 and later, and very CLEAR notes that those updates should NOT be installed on Office 2016 volume/retail/one time purchase installations, OR it is likely the license will be upgraded to 365.

USERS READING THIS MESSAGE: This is so convoluted I may even have it wrong, but if you agree, or don't agree, that I have described the situation correctly, please chime in, because apparently MU either doesn't agree with me or themselves don't grasp the big picture all together. But it is very clear just reading some of the posts the last few days that people are confused and the notes on this page are not clarifying the situation. Bottom line, whatever the year (2016 vs 2019), keep updates and info on 365 and one time purchase/retail/volume SEPARATE. Or if MU only wants to address 365, fine, then change the title on this page and add '365' to the description and make clear any updates/llinks on the page only apply if you have 365 subscription.

100% agree! And even worse, MacUpdate, there ARE NO 17.17.x Updater!! Office 2019 is still v. 16, in the case of Word 16.17.

You HAVE to split this up into 3 different pages: Office 2016, Office 2019 AND Office 365 (subscription).

To see that we are right and you are wrong, read and understand for yourselves:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/release-notes-office-2016-mac

then clean up this mess .. ;)
